Language Arts 6
Summer Reading Requirements
Students Entering Grade 6
Book One:
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Book Two:
Read one book from this list.
The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan
The Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
The Ghost of Crutchfield Hall by Mary Downing Hahn
Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse
The View from Saturday or From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
Star Fisher by Lawrence Yep
Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli
The Mystery of the Mammoth Bones by James Cross Giblin
Wild Girl by Patricia Reilly Giff
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
Project:
You are a talk show host and have invited the main characters from the two books that you read. Think of fifteen good questions that you would ask the main characters. Using complete sentences, type the questions and the answers that the characters give. The questions should not have a yes or no answer. Make sure you have several questions for each character about important events from the beginning, middle, and end of the books.
Example:
Mrs. Lidinsky, the talk show host: Auggie, how did you feel when your mom said you had to go to school instead of being home-schooled?
Auggie: I was upset and worried that kids would make fun of me. I had hoped my dad would take my side, but he didn’t. However, my mom was right. She was terrible at fractions and couldn’t teach me anymore.
Book Three
Read a book of your choice that is on your reading level. Write a paragraph including the title, author, main characters, conflict and how it was solved. Then write a paragraph telling why this book should or should not be on next year’s reading list.
