In Science we are discussing DNA and life on a cellular level. The students will produce three shoebox dioramas to show their knowledge of our discussions. To complete this the students will create a two parent cells and one offspring cell. The parents cells will need to be identifiably different while still showing all of the cell parts. There will be one offspring cell created. This offspring will need to show the combination of both parent cells while showing dominant traits, recessive traits, blended traits, and a mutation. The students will also complete a short essay that will explain how they developed their dioramas and how the offspring shows each of the sections that it needed to show.
Physical Education 6-7-8 January 2014
The students have discussed the issue of poverty with Ms. Rachel in their Social Justice class. In an attempt to have them better understand the impact of this issue they will be completing a project that will relate income to basic expenses to three levels of income. In this project they are given the yearly income for families. They should choose the number that best represents their household, for example one child, mom, and dad are a household of three. After this they need to choose the monthly expenses that most families have. The students were given the average area cost for electric, water, rent/mortgage, cell phones, and cable. With a little bit of math a total will be completed that will present a total without groceries included. At this point the student create a menu for two week of balanced meals which will include the three basic meals of the day. A trip to the grocery store will allow them to gather the prices for the supplies they would need to prepare the menu within their homes. A little more math is completed and the students will then have a monthly figure for their basic living expenses. By the end of the project students will see how a family with a poverty income will struggle to provide for these basic needs while a family with a decent income will have fewer issues. Their information will be presented in a chart format with a written analysis of what they discovered as well. They will be able to see that you are only as healthy as you can afford to
